“My paintings stand witness to the curious journeys in my head,
like journals of vistas to which only I am privy.”

Taking moods and nuances from many travels throughout her life, the sources for Anke’s paintings very often are personal photographs collected throughout the years.

Many of these photographs find their way into her paintings. She discovered that using media like modeling paste, foil, paper and acrylic paint enable her canvases to turn into optical illusions on many different levels.

“This metaphor guides my work through ideas of concealment and revelation. The resulting appearance of the image creates tension and narrative. Sometimes I use bits of collaged imagery, remnants of older original paintings and surface marks that are rather suggestive than explained.”

“I completely paint from my imagination. Except guided by a photographic image I approach a painting without pre-conceived ideas about the finished product. I’ll let my intuition guide the brush, allow the ideas to grow, alternating between abstract compositions and real landscapes. I am continually challenging myself with new ideas and materials. Lately my work has become more textural, providing even more depth to the painting.”

“I try to move beyond borders into the world of color, space, light and texture. My goal is to elicit emotion.
I want my work to reflect a moment in time, to tell a story, to give pause for contemplation.”

Anke’s journey is an ever-changing and growing body of work.

“Life is a journey, not a destination.”
